"There are three main fields of urban regeneration in Chinese cities: the transformation of industrial areas and the re-use of industrial heritage; the transformation of old urban areas with the conservation of historical areas and architecture; the introduction of public open space with old city renewal. The urban regeneration is the expression of ideal, aesthetic and sense of value. In China it is mainly driven by government conduction or by market, sometimes it is the combination of both forces. This book introduces the main features of urban regeneration in China with 10 typical case studies in Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan and Chengdu with illustrated presentation. The creators of those areas have shown their great care of urban context and identity.... These 10 cases are only a small part of the experiments of urban renewal in China, but all these 10 cases have presented the effort and prototype of urban regeneration. As Greek philosopher Heraclitus said that the invisible harmony is more important than visible one, city is an organic entity with its life, the urban regeneration must put the emphasis on the urban ecology and organic regeneration, just as the metabolism of a life."
